Things That I Think Makes YAPC::Asia Tokyo Special, And Also Make It Work

Here I list things that I think makes YAPC::Asia Tokyo special, not like any other YAPC in the world. Currently most items link to a placeholder article, because I haven’t gotten around to writing them yet.

  • All of our videos are up on YouTube, ASAP.
  • We treat YAPC like a real business: that is, we have short and long term goals, we have a very strict policy on budget, we take our sponsor relationship very very seriously.
  • We have around 50 sponsors, including media sponsors and network sponsors.
  • We have a “sponsor menu”. We don’t just ask for money — we have specific items that people can sponsor for, which makes it easier to make a decision.
  • In order to accommodate 1000+ geeks all using the network all at once, we actually work together with CONBU, a team of network enthusiasts. For the last two years, they have built our network from scratch (i.e. we don’t use the venue’s builtin network) that allows the attendants to quickly send and receive stuff. This also means that if an emergency call comes in, they can work from the venue — of course we prefer for that to not happen, but when it does, they can get stuff done. This gets one more reason not to come to YAPC::Asia out of the way☺
